This is Justin Rice. As I was doing ym research today I stumbled upon the wonderful movie known as "The Dark Knight" which was a graphic novel which I now cant wait to read.
As I was researching I noticed some huge numbers that that movie pulled in so heres some food for thought.
The budget for the movie was $185 million
The movie made $585 million dollars as of May 2009
Based on that math I will have to work another 1541666 days landscaping before I even come close to the budget.
yeah so I definately blogged yesterday but I guess it didn't show up. Whatever. Anyway yesterday wasn't very productive because I was thinking too much about what sources were accurate to even begin looking at. So I went for pictures of comics in the golden age. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go to the books because they're the easiest to site.
Ya i found that comix are pretty dirt, the three dictionarys i checked don't even have a definition for them, which is interesting. Also the biggest dictionary in the library didn't have 'graphic novel' in it. weird
This is Ryan Kelly. As I was researching my project with the other Ryan I found out how much our movie "Iron Man" has made. It was published by Paramount Pictures and grossed $318,412,101. It is not as much as "The Dark Knight," however it was a much better movie. The opening weekend it took in $100.8 million in just North American theaters and cost $135 million to produce it. Paramount even said that it was its best opening weekend for an action movie ever. Thats what "Iron Man" is all about.
I would just like to say that the ABC clio and another magazine that the scool provides fr us did not work with me at all on this project. When searching THE DARK KNIGHT it gave me random stories about guys that took a cat out of a tree. WHich I found odd because it was the guys cat that he got out of the tree. So he isnt a Dark Knight at all he is a jerk and should look after his cats.
Dont use the ABC Clio for research. Really to broad and theres too much.
btw it's Mia Well I used my book idea and now I know I have good information. My partner has already started this therefore I will hand over my information over to her. She has found a nice site called factmonster. Just incase some others were looking for information, it gives the author. I need to find a book for my section that I'm working on. That's my prgress so far for today.
Me and max are researching controversy and we founf that Michale Moore, the founder of Underground Comix, was one of the little kids who's parents made him burn his own comics when he was younger, which i found to be pretty cool.
The Golden Age comics were nothing that I had expected. I thought Superman and Batman action heroes were the ones made at the time but I guess according to this one book I'm looking at. It was captain America, the human torch, and the sub-mariner are the ones made in the time called the Golden Age. I can see why they would be so popular as World War two begins and the depression children need a lift. I'm working on ways to describe the age to the class in the presentation. -mia
Day 2 I found a few different wed sites that could be helpful to anyone doing Question B. http://www.dereksantos.com/comicpage/comicpage.html http://www.thecomicbooks.com/nsp1-04.html http://www.graphicnovels.brodart.com/history.htm
I started to construct a timeline using these websites
Hey, it's Danielle, actually being somewhat productive in this class...for once. We also have found that some of the films that Miyazaki has worked on were created before the manga. Normally it is the other way around. In where a person would take novels (in this case graphic novels/manga) and make them either into an animated movie like Nausicaa or into a live action like Death Note (by Tsugumi Ohba) and Meitantei Conan/Detective Conan/Case Closed (Gosho Aoyama).
So i though that getting project D would be easy, but it turns out that there are no articles online and even less on Powersearch about the making of the movie. There are all reviews of the movie. However, i was able to get a ton of awesome graphics for the presentation
Danielle and I are researching Hayao Miyazaki, a manga artist that many Americans are also familiar with. We found helpful sites for our research that give updates on Miyazaki's new projects. http://www.ghibli-museum.jp/ (Don't bother clicking. It's completely in japanese xD)

I've compiled quite a bit of info on the CCA and the general scope of the Comic Controversy. I'm working on the book burnings and other censorship. I'm saving Mad Magazine for last because there should be a plethora of information on it.
I found ok definitions for Comix, most of them just say it is the undergreound form of comics, or comics for an adult audiance b/c of topics such as politics or life. yeah right... The book: Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels: A history is very helpfull and will probably be used by my group for the entire project
Today all I am working on is writing out my information on the Golden Age. I now know a lot about this topic but now I need to prove that I do. I have written down all my sources that I need for citations. The problem now is to look up the MLA format for each. Good luck to me and everyone else.
According to the MAD website their history includes them making Michael Jordan a basketball player, Toru Iwatani making Pac-Man, and Sadam making nerve gas among other things. I don't really trust it but it the most information I could get and it was from the MAD website so one can hope for the best I suppose.
Hey all. I was having trouble with citations but I found a website that was absolutely perfect lol. http://old.oslis.org/MLACitations/elementary/index.php So today I figure I'm going to try to get all the citations done I've used then continue to write the paper part of the section I'm doing. I'm also doin a spanish project today but if I do get done with all that I will start my power point for my seccion of this project. Not sure what order I'll go in. I guess it depends on how motivated I am. Well again hope that website works for people. -Mia
So we had assumed that since Totoro is always associated with Hayao Miyazaki, and it is the Studio Ghibli logo character, that My Neighbor Totoro was one of his first big movies, but it turns out that he had actually created 44 movies before My Neighbor Totoro came out in 1988. We were so off...
I read the Marvel Comics book. I learned about the very interesting character, Whiz Man. Whiz man is the most pointless super hero and pretty much a disgrace to comics worldwide. Whiz man had super speed and he obtained it through an injection of mongoose blood. Another aspect about him that is funny is that they left the character alone for three decades just to bring him back and kill him off for good.
To be honest the history of comics is pretty straight forward. There is nothing unexpected about how comics came to be and how they became/ will continue to become "Good" literature. Although I am not exactly familiar with popular graphic novelist, it was very interesting learning about them and the reason/ personal exageration incorporated in their stories. I though Frank Miller offered an interesting story about how he became involved with comics, and obviously Will Eisner was fun to learn about after reading his novels!
Quote from Toshio Suzuki (Studio Ghibli Producer), answering "Do you have a specific image of Ghibli?":
"I want it to be an enviroment for making good films, where many different talents contribute in their own way.
Thats my dream. To sum up, Ghibli is about many people working together to turn one person's idea into film.
It's about the fun of doing it.
On the other hand westeners, The Disney people and others, see it as impossible for a single person to conceive a feature animation film. So they collaborate in forming an idea.
I finally found a good source of information on the Golden Age of Comics. I was able to write that slide about it and now all I have left is the timeline.
So today I've been finishing up the golden age. Pretty much writing my last paragraph on the context. I have yet to begin on the question why heroes were important but that will be easy because they were very important during World War Two. The comics during the Golden Age all the covers are like political cartoons the way they depict heroes fighting the Nazi. I just figured we'd each pull up our own powerpoint but I guess we're not doing that so they're sending me all their stuff and just putting it into one. Watch me juggle this. -Mia
Production for today; The subsitute seemed very willing to help which was nice of him. For me, I'm just working on my citations finished my hero importance paragraph too. I need a picture of mighty mouse, another funny animal comic a cowboy comic, a crime comic and romance comic for my powerpoint. Then have to do the citations for those. At that point I'll be done with the Golden Age. Our group missed a seccion about naming illustrators and writers, so I have taken it upon myself to also write this part. Most likely I will recieve help from Lauren because we have study together 6th period. It's slowly coming along which is great. -Mia
Today i found plenty of great materials and put together a great presentation. I learned that iron man and Captain America both strted together in the same series of comic in the silver age, and stuck together until captain america finally got assassinated in an iron man comic
Last night I watched the special features of the Dark Knight. I did not find much information on the process of producing the movie which I needed. However I found out that every time the joker is involved in the movie there is a high pitch sound that used to be two guitars and a cello. Yeah awesome...
All I have left to do is the timeline of Comic History. Towards the end of class I was working on making my project look better with pictures and colors.
I diligently worked on my timeline today but much to my dismay the librarian felt the need to call me out because one of my fellow graphic novel enthusiasts came over to ask me a question. As baffled as I was I decided to let it go and continue my work.
Slocum that is probably the most useful piece of information that I've read on this blog. Today i found out that there is a Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame which seems like an odd to me but if you look at the people who are in it, you'll see all the major writers, artists and editors. from their it's easy to look up those names to develop your project
Today i learned a little more about Captain America. I thought he had no powers, and i was right, but what makes him special is that he is a perfect soldier, with his strength, speed, agility, reflexes, and healing are to the limits of human potential. -Lackie
Today my group was very productive and used class time diligently! We are thinking about puting together a history book since our project is hitory related. I think this is a great idea! Peace and love, Lexi
He is a super soldier built by the government. He is like batman, neither of them have powers but still fight crime any way. I like these characters because they are more realistic and their comics tend to include more emotions and realistic situations.
today Kenny and i got a lot done, we got about 5 slides done our powerpoint and i feel like we are going to end up in good shape. I also made and origami hat which i was quite proud of
Througout yesterday/today, my group got a powerpoint together. It's pretty much completed and has citations and music from Miyazaki's movies in the background~ Theres also a clip about Miyazaki/Ghibli Studio in there.
today max and i decided to set a goal to make 3 more really informational slides before the end of class. We also decided to create a worksheet that the class could fill out during our presentation.
Has anyone seen the Spirit? I read part of the graphin novel and thought it was well written. I was wondering how the movie compared. Any thoughts. Rob
me and max found the birth of the graphic novel!!!
In 1827, Switzerland's Rudolphe Töpffer created a comic strip and continued on to publish seven graphic novels. In 1837, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" was published by Rudolphe Töpffer and it is considered the earliest known comic book. In 1842, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" became the first comic book published in the United States. "Obadiah Oldbuck" was a forty page book. Each page had several picture panels with accompanying text underneath. -By Mary Bellis, About.com
One thing i learned today was that Iron Man could have been made a movie in 1999. For some reason, it never went through, and it took 4 more tries before the movie got made
Today i learned with the help of justin, that the dark knight the movie does not follow the plot of the graphic novel at all. The graphic novel has batman and superman fighting together against two face and joker but there is no batman in the film. They are in the process of making a sequel though.
Yesterday Kenny and i learned that Mad, the comic, began after many comics were sensored from their prevous novels and began writing humorous, fun comics
Today me and max are grateful that we have Period 6 study hall everyday so that we can finish our project soon. We also found some good information in a book that brs breaker suggested. woo!
So apparently I am an over achiever and cited all my pictures for my power point when I didn't have to. "*ml" So now that my power point is done I had lauren send me hers. I will combine them later. I will be waiting over the weekend for Bianca's powerpoint to put in. Also I still need to do the important comic writers caption things in. Darn.
Yo hey, Danielle here, wow actually doing something for once again. Ain't this a phenomenon?! Anyway over at Brie's house working and tweaking more on the powerpoint, adding more things to the project like a poster for the other grand peeps in the manga/anime world who are not Miyazaki. Starting on working on the paper at the moment. Well, one and a half since one of them has lost their soul to a fruit loop eating flower...yeah not getting into that. So yeah, that is so far what is happening at the moment, will be back on later to tell or in this case write what's up.
We found out that when you try to write an essay when you're realllyyyy tired, you get distracted really easily and make typos...Lots of typos and incomprehensible words... Danielle keeps getting distracted by my dogs... Anyways, essay is almost done, and the power point is now totally completed, and then we'll make a poster about anime/manga in general to relate to our person.
Wow this is a late update at the moment. Anyway, Stayed after school at some point and got some/more of the poster done. We decided to change a few things for it, like instead of having the poster be only about anime/manga in general we will be including some big heads from the anime/manga world along with the initial information that we were going to put on it.
And lies...I was only distracted by the dogs for a few minutes at the beginning before we went to another room --;
Oh, Also forgot to say that we are also redoing some things on the essay, since some of it was still from the time when we were uhh...not completely sane/conscious. Trying to see if we can get a mixed clip of some animes/works that Miyazaki has done to show to the class...but not sure if that will go well, for time wise at least.
Today i finished up the presentation and the paper for the project. Tere is a lot more to Iron Man than i thought going into the project, but you will all hear about that during tomorrow's presentation.
These presentations are pretty neat. I really liket the anime presentation because that is one area of comics that I now nothing about. It looks like a very artistic and thoughtful way of making comics.
Hi its Ryan I woke up today ad went to school. Ryan squared decided to do Iron Man because its ill yo. We found some cool pictures for the slideshow.

Today i learned with the help of justin, that the dark knight the movie does not follow the plot of the graphic novel at all. The graphic novel has batman and superman fighting together against two face and joker but there is no batman in the film. They are in the process of making a sequel though.
ReplyDeleteYesterday Kenny and i learned that Mad, the comic, began after many comics were sensored from their prevous novels and began writing humorous, fun comics
ReplyDeleteI believe I am now fully done with my project.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Stephen.
ReplyDeleteToday me and max are grateful that we have Period 6 study hall everyday so that we can finish our project soon. We also found some good information in a book that brs breaker suggested. woo!
ReplyDeleteand for some reason i have two names. lol ones mrmorris and the others, kenzzx16. but theyre both mackenzie. morris. haha.,
ReplyDeleteSo apparently I am an over achiever and cited all my pictures for my power point when I didn't have to. "*ml"
ReplyDeleteSo now that my power point is done I had lauren send me hers.
ReplyDeleteWe found out that when you try to write an essay when you're realllyyyy tired, you get distracted really easily and make typos...Lots of typos and incomprehensible words... Danielle keeps getting distracted by my dogs... Anyways, essay is almost done, and the power point is now totally completed, and then we'll make a poster about anime/manga in general to relate to our person.
ReplyDeleteWow this is a late update at the moment. Anyway, Stayed after school at some point and got some/more of the poster done. We decided to change a few things for it, like instead of having the poster be only about anime/manga in general we will be including some big heads from the anime/manga world along with the initial information that we were going to put on it.
ReplyDeleteAnd lies...I was only distracted by the dogs for a few minutes at the beginning before we went to another room --;
ReplyDeleteToday i finished up the presentation and the paper for the project.
