What did you learn from Scott McCloud?

According to McCloud, what's the difference between an icon and a symbol? Why is important to know the difference?

Name at least one thing you learned from Understanding Comics that will affect how you will read and evaluate graphic novels.

Add relevant comments that will contribute to our understanding or appreciation of graphic novels.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Hello All,

I noticed that some students are posting regularly and adding to the blog in a substantial way. Great work. There are others I haven't heard from so much. Where are you? We are in the library until Friday. You should have your project and presentation wrapped up by then. Don't forget top write the paper portion of the project, citing sources within and providing a works cited page. I have slots assigned for presentations on Monday, Tuesday (unless we drop), and Wednesday. I will give you your day and time slot this Thursday. Be ready to go!

A suggestion...

Review the directions for your section of the project and make sure you are REALLY answering the questions (not just collecting pictures for pretty powerpoint flare).
Report to me through the blog that you are indeed answering some specific questions....
I expect to see some real progress.

Hello All,

The purpose of this blog is to get you all accustomed to blogging academically. This isn't facebooking with friends. So write as if you were entering a response in your journal. You will be graded and you must raise the level of discussion to academic standards. Generally, the content of your comments are good, but the delivery is too casual. Capitalize and punctuate and write with a mature voice. No more lower case stuff. Uuughh. Your professors won't appreciate this next year. Keep the humor, just write with maturity.

Your friend,

The English Teacher
